On behalf of Sportswave we want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving and hope you have a pleasant long weekend.

For those who are unsure Thanksgiving was started in Canada mainly starting from European settlers who gave thanks for their safe arrival in a new land as well as there successful harvests.

Eventually it became a national holiday which was first celebrated with several celebrations dating back to 1578.

Thanks was held along with several indigenous peoples and was officially declared a national holiday in 1879 as well set up to take place the second Monday in October in 1957 so as not to conflict with Remembrance Day.

Over the past number of years I have been fortunate to work with several great individuals such as Laird Allan, Wes Shaw, Mark Steffens, Jagraj Lalli along with various sports groups to help promote various sports they are all involved in.

It’s fair to mention that if I named one group it would take some time to name them all so having said that I’ll mention that we most sincerely appreciate working with everyone and offer our thanks.

Here’s hoping that everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving with Family and Friends.

From our team to your Family – HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!

Changes In The Plans For John Oliver Park? https://www.sportswave.ca/changes-in-the-plans-for-john-oliver-park/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=changes-in-the-plans-for-john-oliver-park Mon, 11 Aug 2025 23:59:14 +0000 http://54.213.246.179/?p=64332 Photo Credit Sportswave

The post Changes In The Plans For John Oliver Park? first appeared on SportsWave Broadcasting.

]]>
Rumors are running rampant depending on whom you talk with about finally making or having a development with John Oliver park off hwy 10 at the bottom of Scott Road or 120th.

For our “two cents worth” the Park desperately needs lights at the entrance plus additional seating as well as something other than the two metal rusty containers on the far side of the field which are waiting for someone to get seriously injured before changes are made. SAD BUT TRUE!!!

If you’re old enough to remember the park was to have an arrangement with the Whitecaps back in 2008 allowing them to develop a team training facility, plus a National Training Centre.

That was when Delta’s Mayor Lois Jackson had a meeting with Premier Gordon Campbell discussing establishing the above mentioned National Soccer Training facility.

Just thinking – just maybe Lois might be able to add some additional thoughts to why this fell apart – just maybe?

The idea to build a soccer training centre at the 20-hectare (50-acre) land saw the municipality sign a memorandum of understanding with the Whitecaps to construct a $31 million plan which included a clubhouse for both National and Professional players, on several fields to which Delta would pay for all roadway improvements.

The Municipality would provide a 60-year-lease for the Whitecaps which would allow a portion of the park to be used by the club while Delta residents were told that Premier Campbell and Liberal candidate Wally Oppal promised provincial funding during the 2009 election campaign.

The proposal was taken off the drawing board when Delta and the soccer club were unable to agree on how much community usage would be.

Delta Councillor chaired the Parks and Rec Commission (at that time) Robert Campbell mentioned “They really didn’t offer any community access and we were stuck with them offering times amassing to like six tournaments a year plus the Caps also wanted to build one artificial turf field where we required they build two.”

Fast forward to 2012, the Whitecaps and government announced BC would assist to complete “a world-class soccer development centre” at UBC while the Caps had also launched a soccer academy in partnership with the school district which also received a “Red Card.”

“Care should be made to ensure a comprehensive plan is followed for development,” the plan notes.

In recent conversation with some individuals at City Hall they mention that some of the Delta’ medium-term (2023-2027) wish list ideas at JO currently include improvements to the park such as additional fields, a fieldhouse capable of hosting community activities, additional parking and other improvements.

Estimated cost for all those projects at the site add up to $30 million and if you say it fast it’s not all that much given today’s market value of playing fields.

Before the earlier plan that went south with the Whitecaps, the city had earlier made an arrangement with the Ex-Britannia Rugby Association for the park which included restoring the John Oliver Bark which for many was a landmark plus developing new playing fields – neither of which happened!

Sadly for many the barn was deemed not feasible which created somewhat of a “firestorm” and eventually dismantled.

Fast forward to the July 28 Regular Council Meeting, Delta Council received reports on three major initiatives that will hopefully shape the future of parks, recreation and culture in the city,

These include the John Oliver Park Master Plan, the new Parks, Recreation & Culture Master Plan, and the final Sports Field Needs Assessment report.

Delta Mayor George V. Harvie mentioned “These are exciting projects that reflect our commitment to supporting a growing and active community.”

He continued “We want to thank park users and the sports organizations that have contributed to date and are looking forward to hearing from residents as we move ahead with long-term planning for our parks, programs, and sports facilities.”

If you’ve got ideas contact Delta’s City Hall and come up with some new ideas which will shape the future of John Park.

Given the warm/hot weather in the area its fair to say that nothing will deter any athlete from competing in any event and one such individual is Matti Erickson.

The Jerome Classic is one event that he along with others have marked on their calendar considering they have been “gearing up” for the event for months if not years.

We received the following from the Jerome Classic and in keeping up with our tradition of promoting various sports this event is no different.

Enjoy the read:

In another sign that the men’s 800 metres at the Jerome Classic on Tuesday could be the race to watch, two of the leading contenders set personal best times on Saturday while also going under the qualifying standard for September’s world championships in Tokyo.

Navasky Anderson continued his impressive 2025 season by lowering the Jamaican national record for the second time this year, clocking one minute, 44.40 seconds to win the 800 at the Sound Running Sunset Tour meet in Los Angeles.

In a tightly contested finish he held off American Abe Alvarado, who clocked 1:44.47 and Nelson, B.C. ‘s surprising Matti Erickson, who was just behind in 1:44.49.

Erickson, a University of Oregon runner and the reigning Jerome champion, bettered his previous PB of 1:45.74 set at the Portland Track Festival in June, 2024.

Anderson’s winning time shaved 0.21 seconds off the national record of 1:44.61 he had set just last month at a meet in Baltimore, which had itself improved upon the 1:44.70 mark he set in 2023.

Saturday’s race saw him deliver a well-timed surge over the final 100 metres to secure both the victory and the record, cementing his status as Jamaica’s premier half-miler.

Both Anderson and Erickson came in under the 1:44.50 World Athletics qualifying standard for Tokyo. Anderson’s 1:44.40 currently ranks as the 38th fastest time in the world for 2025, while Erickson’s 1:44.49 is the 42nd fastest.

While several men have broken the 1:44 barrier this year, Anderson, 25, and Erickson, 22 are clearly showing they have the ability to threaten that time in the highly demanding two-lap event.

Could this be the year that the 37-year-old Jerome record of 1:43.70 by American Johnny Gray is seriously threatened?

April brings a new month for the summer sports that are played in various communities and cities in BC we are expanding our coverage for Sportswave.

While we cover a vast variety of sports given the way the world is twisting with lots of uncertainty in North America which seems to be the topic each day regardless of what coffee shop, ball diamond, soccer pitch or yes even the rinks we are expanding our coverage to call it TRAVEL TUESDAY!!!!

With spring and summer quickly approaching many families are still undecided as to where they are looking to take their summer holidays and are concerned about travel to the US as well as the dollar exchange.

As one family mentioned “it’s about making the right decision for your family and not having to worry about any issues that might arise or crop up.

In conversation with many over the last while everyone we spoke to mentioned that it’s time to stay at home in either Canada for its beauty or even yet stay closer to home and vacation in BC.

While the idea at the time seemed somewhat out of sorts when you think of it, that’s probably one of the best suggestions I have heard of in the past while.

So staying in BC for the first article, why not visit the beauty of the Interior and spend time visiting Sicamous and spend time vacationing on one of the Sicamous Houseboats.

If you’re looking for peace, tranquility and a place simply to get away this is the vacation you should be considering this year for either the Family or time to regroup with your business colleagues.

Having been on one of the Houseboats I can let you know that my time spent was probably the most enjoyable vacation I have had in a long time simply relaxing.

A houseboat vacation is a unique getaway that allows you to live on a floating home, while navigating through waterways or staying anchored in a picturesque location.

It combines the comforts of home with outdoor adventures while allowing you to enjoy water activities like swimming, fishing and being able to dock on the shoreline to explore nature.

Houseboating is an amazing way to experience life on the water with the flexibility to enjoy both water and shore activities with friends and family in the summer months.

Houseboats offer spacious accommodation and are designed with an emphasis on areas for socializing, dining, and relaxation and feature cozy sleeping quarters.

Should you need more information regarding the dimensions or layout, details of each houseboat are available upon request.

You’re the Captain and control your Houseboat holiday which you simply won’t regret while having one of it, not the best holiday you will ever experience while staying in BC.

To qualify, Captains and Co-Captains must be aged 25 or above, possess a valid driver’s license, and have completed our comprehensive training and orientation program, available upon booking.

The kitchens on the houseboats are spacious and are fully stocked with plates, bowls, cutlery, glasses and cookware, a coffee pot, which makes me want to book on that alone.

For a full list of items that you should consider bringing, please see below.

We provide you a temporary license for driving the houseboats when you complete our comprehensive training and orientation program, however this license does not allow you to pilot other watercraft such as Pontoon boats or Jet skis.

MYBOATCARD® is Canada’s leading provider of the Canadian boating license, also known as the Pleasure Craft Operator Card. You can study, take the test and print your boating license all online.

Use the discount code: SICAMOUS40 to receive a 40% discount from your Canadian Boating License.

You should be aware that the season consists from May to September which offers Sicamous mild to warm weather, with daytime temperatures ranging from 16-35°C (61-95°F) and cooler nights between 5-17°C (41-63°F).

Living in BC you are or should be familiar that during May and June you could experience some rainfall while July and August are the warmest and driest months.

If summer isn’t your cup of tea school returns and if you want to simply get away this might be your month to holiday!!

We’ve added a live stream camera to keep you informed of the latest lakeside weather conditions, click here to view!

For additional info visit and tell them SPORTSWAVE SENT YOU!!!!!!!

Attention first responders! A quick reminder: To honour your incredible service, Sicamous Houseboats is proud to offer a 10% discount on any booking.

Treat yourself to some much-needed relaxation on the water – just make sure to mention your profession when you book. 😊

With many finishing up their hockey season and others set to kick-off their season it’s time that we should spend time and focus on those who are less fortunate to play any sport only due to the cost.

We all know that sport in today’s world isn’t affordable tor some families who are forced to sit on the side-lines and watch their friends play a sport they would love to get involved in.

A few years back I managed to take a friend who had never attended in the past and they were totally amazed at not just the night, but how KidSport actually helps out Kids in Delta.

Each year KidSport Delta holds a fundraiser and this year being no exception which is being held at Tsawwassen Springs called Casino Night with tickets still available.

We all enjoy sports either in person at an event or on the “Tube” but have you ever wondered about those who are unable to participate for whatever reason which may vary from family to family.

Regardless the reason having the ability to attend several sporting events I for one am shocked at the youngsters that I talk with who have told me “we can’t play cause Mom can’t afford it” and this is where KidSport Delta helps out.

This event is currently looking for sponsorship which you can get involved in for only $500.00 which isn’t much if you think of all the money we throw away over a coffee, lunch or an evening out.

Let’s all forgo one of the nice things that we are fortunate to enjoy and help those less fortunate.

If you are able to attend this year’s event you’ll enjoy their guest speaker who has Olympic medals to let you touch for a moment.

This year they are thrilled to announce that the annual KidSport Delta Fundraising Gala will be held on April 26th, 2025, and we would love for you to join us again for a memorable evening in support of local youth sports!
Help Us Fund 300 Local Kids in Sports!

Our goal for the Gift of Sport Casino Night is to raise $150,000—enough to give 300 local kids the opportunity to play sports. But we need your help!

We provide grants to help cover the costs of registration fees so that all kids aged 18 and under in Delta can play a season of sport.

Our chapter accepts applications and administers grants of up to $500 per child per calendar year, for kids who live in Delta.

All funds raised by KidSport Delta stay in our community to get local kids off the sidelines and into a season of sport. Let’s work together to build strong kids and strong communities!

GIVE SPORT – Ensure that all kids have the chance to play.

After 13 great years at Sportsnet, I’m moving on. It’s been an incredible journey and I’m thankful to have worked alongside so many great people and played a role in bringing sports and hockey news to fans across Canada and the world. More to come soon.
– Jeff

— Jeff Marek (@JeffMarek) July 26, 2024

Jeff Marek, a long-time and iconic NHL radio and television personality, has recently left Sportsnet, a move that has left many fans and industry insiders both shocked and puzzled.

Marek’s departure was confirmed by Sportsnet, though the network has not provided detailed reasons for his exit, citing only “unconfirmed draft reasons” .T

his lack of clarity has fueled widespread speculation and concern among fans.

Jeff Marek’s Legacy at Sportsnet

Jeff Marek has been a significant figure in hockey broadcasting for over a decade. He joined Sportsnet in 2011 and quickly became a staple in their hockey coverage, known for his insightful analysis and engaging personality.

Marek co-hosted the popular “32 Thoughts” podcast with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman and was a frequent presence on Sportsnet Radio . His contributions have been instrumental in shaping Sportsnet’s hockey coverage, making his sudden departure all the more surprising and impactful.

The Mystery Surrounding His Departure

The circumstances of Marek’s exit remain murky. Reports indicate that he was present at the 2024 NHL Draft but then abruptly disappeared from his duties, including his podcast and radio shows, and has not been heard from since .

Elliotte Friedman mentioned Marek taking a red-eye flight after the first day of the draft, but no further details have been provided .

This abrupt silence has led to rampant speculation among fans and commentators, with some speculating he might join another major network like TSN

The Impact on Sportsnet

Marek’s departure is arguably one of the most significant losses for Sportsnet in recent memory.

His deep knowledge of the game, combined with his ability to connect with audiences, made him an invaluable asset.

Losing such a prominent figure could potentially weaken Sportsnet’s position in the competitive sports broadcasting landscape.

Fans have expressed their disappointment and concern, with many taking to social media to voice their opinions and speculate on the reasons behind his departure .

Why This Could Be a Major Misstep for Rogers

Rogers, the parent company of Sportsnet, may have made a critical error in allowing Marek to leave without a clear succession plan or explanation.

Marek’s influence and popularity are not easily replaceable, and his absence could lead to a decline in viewer engagement and loyalty.

The lack of transparency from Sportsnet only adds to the frustration and confusion among fans, potentially damaging the network’s reputation.

In conclusion, Jeff Marek’s departure from Sportsnet is a significant and perplexing event in the world of hockey broadcasting.

The decision by Rogers to let him go, especially under such unclear circumstances, could be seen as one of the most short-sighted moves in the company’s history.

The full impact of this decision remains to be seen, but it is clear that Marek’s absence will be felt deeply by fans and colleagues alike.

If you age with me you’ll remember that in “our day” music was so much better that what is on the airwaves today, but having said that the world has changed ever so drastically.

Not necessarily in a better way, but the kids of today will never experience what our generation was able to do.

Yes your grandmother wore mini-skirts and we wore bell bottom pants and had the luxury of watching and hearing the world change in the music world.

Generations will pass and never experience our music and I for one find it interesting that today’s youth are listening to “our music” as well as taking in the concerts from legends like Elton John.

If you’re old enough to remember the TV show Happy Days – that was our time and it’ll never be replaced!

What was exciting was that we had a new number one song pretty much every week, remembering going to watch Roy Orbinson play in Victoria only getting lost due to getting lost with a pair reading the map upside down.

It’s fair to say that Red was the Canadian version of Dick Clark as he was the one who changed the way we listened to music in the lower mainland.

For me personally it’s sports, music and Family that keep things going and without anyone of the above three – we live in a pretty boring world.

Aretha Franklin had a hit song called |Respect” and that one word says it all!!!!

Rock and Roll as I was once told was the key to happiness and it clearly took any negative issues you may have had during the day.

Growing up in Ontario we listened to CHUM Radio and visited Sam The Record Man as well as going to Yorkville on some of our frequent trips.

We moved to BC and from there it was CFUN, CKLG, Red Robinson and Fred Latamone along with others who filled the air-waves bringing their “stage presence” to the thousands tuning in.

Now we are hearing the passing of not just a radio personality, but also a radio legend who introduced the Beatles at the PNE in addition to grabbing an interview with the “King” – Elvis!!

For what social media bring to the world the following was posted on FaceBook by his Family.

Our most sincere condolences to his Family

“With deep sadness and broken hearts, we bring the news that our beloved Dad, Red Robinson, passed away this morning at 8:15am after a brief illness.

We’re so glad we got to spend his final moments with him, and having his brother Bill there made it extra special.

Most people knew our Dad as a rock’n’roll DJ, a TV personality, an ad agency owner, a spokesperson, or through his philanthropic work.

He was larger-than-life in a lot of ways, but to us he was a devoted father and grandfather, a loving husband to our late mom Carole, and a loyal friend to everybody.

Red’s departure leaves a huge hole in our lives, as well as the lives of everybody he touched in the worlds of radio, TV, music and entertainment.

An event celebrating his amazing life will be announced soon, and we invite you to share your memories here on Facebook.

We can’t think of a better way to sum up Dad’s life than the lyrics to one his favourite Elvis songs, “If I Can Dream”:

Out there in the dark, there’s a beckoning candle… and while I can think, while I can talk, while I can stand, while I can walk… while I can dream, oh, please let my dream come true… right now.”

Now I am hearing that some NHL teams are looking to discontinue pride nights, and according to some it’s to protect Russian players from issues they might face when they return home in the off-season..

Some are saying players who take part in pride nights might be on the receiving end of arrest warrants in Russia when they return, which as one might expect be honest fears on their home soil in Russia.

I am hearing that Russia recently updated their anti-gay laws this past December, which makes it illegal to spread “propaganda” regarding what the Country labels as nontraditional sexual relations which includes any social or advertising which includes being promoted in or at movie theatres.

So staying with the above concern it was not surprising that Flyers D-man Ivan Provorov (26) chose to not take part in the team’s pre-game warmup.

I am hearing from sources that he (Provorov) mentioned that it was his Russian Orthodox religion as the reason he never took part that saw the team wear their Pride Jersey’s as well as having their sticks wrapped in rainbow pride tape.

I hear from some who are short-sighted that they are hoping and wanting Pride Night for all teams discontinued and mandated by various leagues, but we all know that this will never happen, now or in the immediate future.

Hockey as well as all sports is a way for everyone to put their skills on display in hopes of eventually playing at the pro level of the game which includes various leagues around the world.

Recently the BCHL Coquitlam Express hosted Pride Night January 27th as they were playing host to the Cowichan Valley Capitals in a game that was met with much controversy.

The event went on and I hear that there was additional security on site to curb any situation that might arise, but also hear that it went well.

One has to ask if other teams will follow and in particular other leagues at the Junior B level of the game as well such as the VIJHL, KIJHL and the PJHL

So while many are looking at cancelling Pride Night; what next the Cancellation of Diwali Night, Armed Forces Night, Hockey Fights Cancer, St. Patricks night or even the opening with First Nations.

My Father was a WW2 Vet and fought for our freedom and like it or not it’s a changing world!

We currently have enough issues in the world that we are facing and if you think it’s a perfect world just look at what is happening around the globe and in particular look at Ukraine and the toll this is taking on its citizens – young and old alike.
