When any team has the chance to reach not just the finals within their league moving on to play at the National Championship it’s a completely different story with no storybook ending.

The Presidents Cup is the National Senior B level box lacrosse championship for the Canadian Lacrosse Association with championship awards of Gold, Silver and Bronze to the respective winning teams.

The Pioneers first attempt at winning the championship was in 1990 when they finished fourth, dropping the game against the Owen Sound North Stars by a 11-5 margin with the series played in Fergus Ontario.

Locally the Ladner Pioneers have been graced with winning five Presidents Cup Championships with the first dating back to 1998 when they defeated the Newton Golden Eagles when the series was played in Tuscarora, NY.

Their second championship was in 2004 with a 6-3 win that saw the event played in Langley when they went on to defeat the Kahnawake Mohawks (ILA) with the Langley Knights finishing third that saw Rob Cook named as the MVP.

In 2006 they finished third that saw the Wellington Aces (OLA) take top spot defeating the Sherwood Park Outlaws 9-5

The Pioneers managed a third place finish pulling out a 12-6 win over the Tri-City Bandits as the host team for the championship.

The championship was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID 19 Pandemic which put everything on hold for two full seasons for all sporting events in  Canada as well as other sports.

The 2022 season saw the Pioneers pull out an impressive 8-6 championship win when they defeated the Akwesasne Bucks (CAN-AM) finishing second with the championship played in Edmonton.

The 2022 season saw a “new look” Pioneers team hit the floor that saw them regain top seed winning the championship over Akwesasne Bucks (CAN-AM) while Six Nations finished third with the series played in Edmonton.

Striving for dominance as the “top dog” in Senior B Lacrosse in Canada saw them again build a championship team in 2023 that saw them defeat the Edmonton Miners (RMLL) while the Oakville Rock finished third with the series played in Oakville on their home floor.

Three-peats are hard to come by for any organization but the Pioneers bid to host the championship a success they worked long tireless hours to put on a successful championship with the Pioneers being the host team.

The series was played in Ladner, home for the Pioneers in a series that saw them fill the Leisure Centre for each game – day and night.

The final championship was played on a Saturday night in front of a packed building with the “fire marshal” probably looking the other way.

The week long championship event was organized by John Burr and with his group of volunteers the event ran like clock work going off without a hitch.

Their opponent was the Edmonton Miners who gave them a good run but in the end came up just short of taking the trophy back to Edmonton, to the delight of the home town fans.

The 2025 season saw a “re-build” that saw them finish with a record of 13 wins, 2 losses grabbing 146 goals while allowing 78  that saw them advance to the league final against the Shamrocks.

The best of three saw them sweep the visitors in a three game series advancing to the Presidents Cup Championship venturing back east in hopes of bringing the championship back to Ladner, which failed to happen.

The trip east saw them come up short playing five games that saw them win two, dropping three coming up short in the  goal department scoring 39 and giving up 44 with 66 PIM’s with a winning % of 0.400.

They continue to entertain the local fans on home floor but putting a championship team is something that not all teams can manage.

The three championship seasons (2022, 2023 and 2024)  saw Alex Buque (2022), Austin Shanks (2023) and Christian Del Biance (2024) named MVPs.

The Pioneers leading scorers for the Presidents Cup in the following years.

  • Kyle Goundry 1997 (10 goals/9 assists)
  • Jeff Pringle 2007 (12 goals/7 assists)
  • Tyler Pace 2024 (10 goals/26 assists)

The Warriors played host to the Colorado Mammoth in a Friday night match-up on College Night that featured various local players.

Let’s not forget that the Aquilini family purchased the Vancouver Stealth in 2018 which was then  rebranded as the Warriors and relocated from suburban Langley to downtown Vancouver’s Rogers Arena.

This season the Toronto Rock continue to play not only focused, but disciplined aggressive lacrosse leading the league with a perfect five wins.

The Mammoth utilized the talent of Delta’s Jon Phillips, Victoria’s Chris Wardle and Surrey’s Eli McLaughlin who has played with the Mammoth since 2015 in addition to Connor Robinson who hails from New Westminster.

Entering the game saw the teams enter with an identical 2 and 4 record with the Warriors having 62 goals for and 66 against while Colorado has 59 goals and 76 against.

So the game was more focused with each team needing the win with the only team lower in the standings with a record of 1-4 was the Saskatchewan Rush.

The Warriors were forced to change “thenders” after the Mammoth got their sixth of the contest at 9:39 of the second trailing by a narrow 14-13 in the shot department.

The Warriors managed to get their second goal at 5:56 of the second  after a well executed shot off the right side with Keegan Ball.

Try as they might, the Warriors pressed, eventually getting their third of the game and second of the game with Keegan Ball with 1:02 left in the second while giving Colorado.

The first half ended with the Mammoth up by a 9-3 tally that saw them add a pair early in the third eventually adding one from and Kirkness

Shots after the third quarter saw the Warriors outshoot Colorado by a 37-32 margin dominating the third but unable to penetrate the strong “D: play of the Mammoth despite Colorado leading by a 12-5 margin.

The Warriors never quit and mounted a strong comeback grabbing their  sixth of the game as Burnaby’s Riley Lowen pulled them halfway home still trailing by a 12-6 margin.

Despite the game winding down Warriors Keegan Ball collected his third of the game making it somewhat respectable despite trailing by a 13-7 margin with 9:34 left in the last quarter.

It’s the old cliche that it’s never over until the final whistle and in this contest the Warriors got their eighth of the game with 2:49 left in the contest that saw Kevin Crowley with Ball getting his 7th point of the game.

Following the game Head Coach Curt Malawsky was direct in his  remarks regarding the outcome of the team’s loss and he never mixed his words on the play of his team.

The Warriors return to Rogers Arena for their next home game February 12th as they play host to the Saskatchewan Rush.

In a move that took the Vancouver Warriors far too long to make, it’s a welcome addition in today’s announcement that they locked-up Curt Malawsky (53) as both their Coach and GM.

Once this was released earlier in the day I was having coffee with a Jr. GM who said that the Warriors would never win with their current  roster and welcomes the change.

Not only is the change good for the team, but this also filters down to the minor lacrosse in the area given his wealth of knowledge and understanding of the game.

He was named as the club’s third Head Coach and GM for the team, replacing Troy Cordingley who was only serving as the club’s Interim Coach and GM this past season.

Michael Doyle, President, Canucks Sports & Entertainment, Business Operations mentioned “From the outset, we wanted to bring in a difference maker and this is a very important day for the Vancouver Warriors franchise.”

He continued saying “Curt is one of the most highly coveted coaches and front office personnel in the league and we are thrilled with his decision to join us in leading our team in Vancouver. His devotion to the sport and winning pedigree as a player, coach and manager will be a huge boost to the Warriors. Our commitment to him and his commitment to us, shows just how important it is to the both of us to build a championship caliber organization and team.”

He spent the last 13 seasons with the Calgary Roughnecks in the front office and coaching capacity, most recently as AGMand Head Coach.

He first started with Calgary in 2009 as an Associate Coach/Offence Coordinator and Assistant GM, shortly after he finished playing also in Calgary.

In his first three seasons with Calgary he managed a 33-15 regular season record ending with two first-place division finishes and a second-place finish.

He  was promoted to Head Coach in 2012 as well as took on the role of Assistant GM leading Calgary to a 90-80 regular season record along with eight of nine possible playoff appearances (14-11 record).

As if this wasn’t enough he guided them to two Championship Finals in addition to the NLL Championship in 2019.

He won the 2022 Les Bartley Award for NLL Coach of the Year with a franchise record 13-win’s which says it all.

He played in the NLL 12 seasons as a forward, splitting time between the Roughnecks, Arizona Sting, San Jose Stealth, Vancouver Ravens, and Rochester Knighthawks.

During his 159 career regular season games he collected 537 points (260-277-537), 103 PIM’s and 574 loose balls in addition to appearing in 20 NLL playoff games posting 49 points (30-19-49) while winning one NLL Championship with Calgary in his final playing season.

For those unfamiliar with his career his name is synonymous with lacrosse in BC at the pro and junior levels of the game.

His junior playing career with the BCJALL Adanacs where he also played 13 seasons in the WLA with New West, North Shore Indians, and Coquitlam Adanacs.

He shocked many by being a six-time WLA All-Star racking up 716 points (326-390-716) in 227 regular season games plus 410 points (179-231-410) in 137 playoff games where he won the 2001 Mann Cup with Coquitlam.

Prior to the start of the season he was named Head Coach of the WLA Langley Thunder this season while also serving as coach for the BCJALL Burnaby Lakers winning back-to-back Minto Cups in 2004 and 2005.

In 2010 he won the championship with Coquitlam and was inducted in 2015 into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a box player and inducted into the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.

He mentioned “I would first like to thank the Calgary Roughnecks, all the players and staff, Roughnecks ownership and fans, and the city of Calgary for an incredible 16 years with the organization,” “Not only was I fortunate enough to win multiple NLL Championships with them as a player and coach, but it was also there that I learned to play, teach, and win the right way.

He continued adding “At the same time, I am extremely proud to take on this new opportunity in my home province with the Vancouver Warriors and in meeting with the Aquilini family, it was clear that we share the same values when it comes to working hard and earning every achievement. We are also aligned in our commitment to growing the game of lacrosse in British Columbia, both at the grassroots and professional levels, in order to leave the game in a better place than we found it. I am grateful for the opportunity to now be closer to my family and to help build a winning team right here in Vancouver.”

Over the years I have had the chance to talk with Curt and I can say he is a first class individual who clearly has one focus and that’s making the Vancouver Warrior’s a winning team.

This is such welcome news in the lacrosse coaching world and don’t be the least surprised with his involvement bringing young players to the game.

Congrats to Curt and Sportswave wishes him nothing but the best!!!!!!
