Considering that the Mariners now play out of T-Mobile Park rather than Safeco Field the game is still the same and if you’ve never attended a game just maybe it’s time to hit the road south for some exceptional playoff action.

In a match-up that many in the lower mainland were watching mainly due to the fact if the Mariners went on to win they might have to plan a road trip south to Seattle catching the action with the Mariners playing the Jays.

Dreams do come true and when and if you get a chance to catch a game you have to remember that a big part of the Jay’s organization is the Vancouver Canadians team who are a farm team to the Jay’s.

Now you’ll have the chance to take in some electric ball and could possibly be a part of history in the marking.

If you weren’t able to catch the action as the Tigers took their game plan to Seattle in a winner take all against the Mariners in a contest that was played in front of 47,025 fans who for the most part spent the night standing.

The Tigers weren’t going down without a fight in a contest that saw the game played till the early hours of the morning in Detroit that had the fans cheering from a distance.

C’s Game Day

The Mariners pushed the game in a contest that was a must win considering that they haven’t played in for more than two decades.

The win saw them pull out the win over the Tigers in 15 rounds with Mariners Manager Dan Wilson called the squad to earn a 3-2 walk-off win advancing to Toronto against the Blue Jays.

In a contest that went the distance and then some it’ll be interesting to see how they will manage the pitching rotation which has to be tired being pushed to the limit.

Going the extra mile and beyond they somehow managed to get everyone to buy into the concept of winning with contributions from everyone ranging from players on the bench, pitchers or relievers.

The game itself saw the largest lead by either team leading by only one run which was the longest elimination game in postseason MLB history.

We can only imagine the conversation in the club house prior to the first pitch with both clubs knowing that it was a winner take all and advance.

Simply put – there is no such thing as losing having a long hard look at yourself with everyone playing for each other with no free rides.

The Tigers started Tarik Skubal who according to some in the baseball world who just might be the best MLB left-handed pitcher in the game but interesting that he started four games and the Tigers have lost them all.

A.J. Hinch, Tigers Manager pulled Skubal after the sixth inning that saw the Mariners score in the seventh on Leo Rivas’s RBI single that knotted the game until its dramatic conclusion.

When he was asked he mentioned that it was an “Easy decision” after 99 pitches continuing to tell the media “After the fifth, I checked in on him, how he was doing physically and emotionally, and we both knew that he had one left. You know, he emptied his tank and obviously was emotional coming off the mound, and I think that signals exactly where we were in the game. He gave us everything he could.”

It’ll be interesting to know the status of Bryan Woo, Seattle’s Right-Hander, who was left off the ALDS roster apparently due to pectoral inflammation. He did throw in the bullpen Friday and could return knowing that he was the club’s best starter in the regular season who led their rotation with 4.3 wins, 2.94 ERA over 186.2 innings.

Seattle used three starting pitchers in Friday’s win with Luis Castillo and Logan Gilbert both entering in relief which leaves Bryce Miller, who started Wednesday, to take the mound on only three days’ rest.

He (Miller) threw 55 pitches in Game 4 and allowed two runs and four hits in only 4 1/3 innings.

Should he return it’ll be a rematch of the 2022 AL Wild Card Series that saw the Mariners complete a two-game sweep overcoming an 8-1 deficit in Game 2 which is something the Jays want to forget.

Following their 3-2 win the team stayed in Seattle before heading to Toronto which could lead to a late Saturday arrival against the Blue Jays.

Mariners manager Dan Wilson mentioned “Our guys will be ready and we’ll get there tonight, get some rest, and we’ll be ready to go.”

For the first time since 2001 and fourth time overall the Mariners will play in the American League Championship Series, against the Toronto Blue Jays with the seven-game series and the first pitch Sunday night in Toronto at Rogers Centre.

Seattle is starting Bryce Miller while the Jays are starting Kevin Gausman and regardless of who you cheer for it’s going to be exceptional ball!!!

It’s almost like the lyrics of “The Kids are Hot Tonight” by Loverboy released in 1981 as the second and final single from their self-titled debut album .

Anyone who has had a chance to take in games played at Scotia Bank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium this year have their sights set on the C’s managing to pull off the 2025 Championship which currently seems within reach.

The hot and humid weather clearly does not deter fans from taking in any game such as I did this past Friday that saw them hammer Spokane with their eighth straight win with a 15-0 win in a mid-day game in front of just over 5,000 boisterous fans.

The winning continues that saw them make history Sunday afternoon as they pulled off a 3-2 win over the Spokane Indians [COL] in front yet another sellout crowd.

The win is their 10th consecutive victory and 18th in the last 20 games for the hottest team in North America.

It’s interesting to know that they matched a winning streak record for a third time in the last four years and with yesterday’s win the C’s now own the longest winning streak since the franchise began at the turn of the century.

Sunday’s game saw them trailing 1-0 after Spokane hit a solo homer in the third, but never say never as they managed a push back in the fourth tying the game.

Aaron Parker led off with a double then advanced to third after two walks, which set up a game-tying sacrifice fly from Je’Von Ward.

Vancouver took the lead for good in the fifth. Sean Keys worked a one-out free pass then raced home on a Cutter Coffey RBI double to make it 2-1.

MLB Pipeline’s #9 Blue Jays prospect Khal Stephen (W, 3-0) made his fifth High-A start and turned in five strong innings in which he gave up one run on three hits, walked one and K’ed two over 71 pitches.

He was followed by Pat Gallagher (H, 4), who gutted out two scoreless frames despite not having his trademark command and control.

He scattered a hit and three walks with three strikeouts while stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base in both of his innings.

Parker hammered a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth, which proved to be the winning run. Leading 3-1 to start the top of the ninth, the C’s survived a lead-off homer in the inning as JJ Sanchez (S, 1) put a bow on his six-out save with three consecutive outs after the long ball.

Despite collecting just three hits in the game, all three factored into the final result. It was the seventh time in 27 games this year where Vancouver came out on top despite getting outhit by their opponent.

With the win, the Canadians are now 35-28 and maintain sole possession of first place in the Northwest League first half standings.

As of press time second place Everett the farm team for Seattle was leading 4-0 in the fourth inning against Tri-City [LAA].

Vancouver’s magic number which is a combination of C’s wins and Everett losses is currently three, though third place Hillsboro is also still in contention; they’re two games back of first.

Should Everett lose tonight, they would be tied with the Hops for second place and find themselves two games behind the C’s with three to play. If the Frogs win, they will remain one game back of first.

The Canadians own the tiebreaker over Hillsboro, but Everett has the tiebreaker over Vancouver.

After an off day tomorrow, the Canadians travel to Eugene to take on the Emeralds [SF] in a six-game series starting Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m.

The first three games of the series are the final three games of the first half.

Catch all the action on Sportsnet 650 and stay up to date with the playoff race via CanadiansBaseball.com and @vancanadians on social.

Thanks to Tyler Zickle for the press release!!

Earlier in the day while taking in a Vancouver Giants game I had the chance to reflect on the past year thinking about how various things have changed.

It’s not just about the sporting world which has and continues to not necessarily embrace change we must understand how changes are affecting the world.

It’s not just the past year but quite possibly over the past five years that has changed in part due to the Covid Pandemic as well as changes to pro sports.

Sports has changed from paper to the overall computerised technological changes for both teams which affects both commercial and business for all sports teams and leagues.

This impact has been affected given the increase with social media with athletes reacting to the way in which fans can now connect with sports.

It’s fair to say that the pro Athletes play a huge “influencer status” reaching the fan base who find themselves being engulfed in the sports betting world which clearly reaches out to all levels and ages.

Big business as we have seen are eager to “eat up”, capture and look at all games in a new light when it comes to high finance.

Locally hockey fans were wishing and more so dreaming of a Stanley Cup run for the Canucks which never happened – again!

New Year’s Resolutions were made and never kept and with hockey winding down Lacrosse was in full swing with the Vancouver Warriors entertaining their solid fan base at Rogers Arena.

Try as they might they only managed a record of 8-10 with 202 goals for and 211 against with Keegan Ball leading the team with 40 GF, 56 GA and 15 PP goals for the squad that finished 12th in the 15 team league.

The Warriors alone have a solid working relationship with the minor lacrosse community in the area all due to community involvement starting with Head Coach Curt Malawsky whose name in the area “ oozes” lacrosse.

From the Warriors the community quickly turns to the Vancouver Canadians who play at the “Nat” as it is commonly known as.

If you’ve never attended a game your quite possibly missing out on some of the best ball in the area not taking away from the minor baseball in the area who have lots to offer at your local ball diamond.

They were unable to win another championship but they were entertaining given that North Delta’s former minor ball player Brent Lavallee is their manager who in his minor days played goal for North Delta MHA.

Ball in the area continues to grow and if you were unable to catch a game you could have taken in some minor lacrosse games at your local rinks.

While the game is Canada’s National Summer Sport it has some interesting and unique rules that requires you to grasp before attending a game or better yet go to a game with someone who knows and understands the game.

If that doesn’t fancy your liking you can always catch some Delta Islanders games on Sportswave which streams all Junior games for your viewing pleasure.

Let’s not forget the BC Lions were in the hunt to finish playing in the CFL Grey Cup which they were hosting but for various reasons which we leave to the team were unable to reach the pinnacle of success being winning the League Championship.

Overall the past year for Sportswave was fun and we appreciate your support at all events we have covered.

The past year we have been fortunate to post some “first class” photos on the site thanks to Mark Steffens, Wes Shaw and last but not least Laird Allan who has been with us since the start in addition to the newest member Jagraj Lalli.

The past year was a roller coaster given the ever changing landscape in various leagues which will continue given the ever changing elected personnel who either get involved for the betterment of the game or want to put their agenda first.

The last part seldom works but it will continue with normally the root of all evil being money and wanting to promote their Son or Daughter to the next level rather than a league first policy.

Sportswave continues to be involved and if you have a sport you want to promote feel free to reach out for live streaming your games, promoting your sport as well as advertising for various  businesses in your area.

Without the support of your community and local business youth sport will no longer continue which simply put is a  sad state in  today;s world.

Sport isn’t cheap in various communities throughout the Province and we recommend that you contact “KidSport” in your area for assistance if needed.

They are a great organization and are in sport for all the right reasons.

On behalf of the Sportswave Team we wish you a Happy and a Safe 2025

In keeping up with the news of the Vancouver Canadians we wanted to share the recent press release from Tyler Zickle, media relations/broadcaster for the C’s and good friend of Sportswave.

Enjoy the read:

The Canadians broke their mini two-game losing streak with a well-earned 3-2 win over the Eugene Emeralds [SF] at PK Park on Saturday evening.

Starters Rafael Sanchez (W, 5-1) and Manuel Mercedes were dealing early on in this one, with each recording six strikeouts over three scoreless innings.

The Exploding Whales – Eugene’s alternate identity for the night – got on the board first in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a walk and two hits.

As we’ve grown accustomed to seeing in the second half, the C’s responded quickly to the deficit.

After Je’Von Ward walked to start the inning, Peyton Williams crushed a line drive that bounced over the right field wall for a rulebook double.

A pop out followed, but the stage was set for Robert Brooks with two outs. After scoring the only two runs for the C’s over the last two games, the Marietta, GA native delivered a go-ahead, three-run home run to left field to make the game 3-2. It proved to be the game winner.

With Sanchez battling a high pitch count through five innings, the C’s turned to Chay Yeager (H, 6) for the sixth. After putting the first two batters on, the right-hander struck out the next man before inducing an inning-ending double play.

Grayson Thurman (H, 6) followed, allowing two hits over two innings while striking out two. Jonathan Lavallee (S, 3) entered for the ninth and struck out the side to earn his third save of the year.

With the win, the C’s move to 15-5 in the second half while Eugene falls to 10-10.

The series wraps up tomorrow at 4:05 from PK Park with Pat Gallagher (3-4, 4.86) toeing the slab for Vancouver and Cesar Perdomo (1-1, 3.14) on the mound for the Emeralds.

Catch the series finale of RE/MAX Canadians baseball on Sportsnet 650.

With last night’s win, the C’s improve to 5-6 against the Giants affiliate this season. This afternoon’s game will be the last that the Canadians will play in Eugene this year.

The Emeralds will visit Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver for two series towards the end of the season: August 6-11 and September 3-8. CREAM OF THE CROP: Vancouver has four MLB.com Top 30 Blue Jays prospects on the roster: #10 LHP Kendry Rojas, #17 RHP Juaron Watts-Brown, #21 OF Jace Bohrofen and #25 Dasan Brown.

JUNIOR GIANTS:

The Emeralds have seven Top 30 Giants prospects on the roster: #2 1B Bryce Eldridge, #10 LHP Joe Whitman, #14 SS Aeverson Arteaga, #18 INF Diego Velasquez, #24 C Onil Perez, #25 SS Cole Foster, #27 OF Jonah Cox

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY:

On July 14th, 1994, Blue Jays World Series hero Joe Carter appears in a game with the front of his jersey displaying ‘TOROTNO’ instead of ‘TORONTO’.

He went six whole innings without anybody noticing the typo. Jersey manufacturer Wilson was deemed to be the culprit for the mistake.

AROUND THE NEST:

Only three runs were scored around the Blue Jays system on Saturday: The Blue Jays were thumped by the Diamondbacks 12-1; Triple-A Buffalo lost their fourth straight game to Lehigh Valley 7-2;

Double-A New Hampshire lost their 5th straight 4-0 to Binghampton; Single-A Dunedin was shut out by Tampa for the second consecutive game, 10-0. ALUMNI REPORT: Alan Roden (23′) continues to heat up for Triple-A Buffalo, collecting three hits in yesterday’s 7-2 loss, including two doubles.

The former Creighton Blue Jay slashed .327/.437/.459 for the Canadians in 2023, earning himself a call-up to Double-A by mid-July.

COLUMBUS STATE’S FINEST:

Robert Brooks continued to stay hot for the C’s, mashing a three run, go ahead home run that proved to be the difference in last night’s 3-2 win.

It was Brooks’ third home run of the season and second of the series after going deep back in game two. It’s also the 14th game winning home run for the Canadians this year.

The Marietta, Georgia native is starting to display the power that led to him hit 66 collegiate homeruns at Columbus State.

P-WILLY STYLE:

Peyton Williams broke a mini two game hitless streak to smack two doubles in yesterday’s 3-2 win.

It’s the first time that the Johnston, Iowa native has doubled twice in a game this year.

He may have had an RBI on his second double, but Je’Von Ward was forced to stay at third base after the line drive bounced over the wall for a ground rule double.

The two hits gave Williams his 11th multi hit performance of the season.

KEEPING PACE

Spokane won their fourth straight game over Everett last night to maintain a tie at the top of the Northwest League standings with the Canadians.

The Indians have been the C’s kryptonite this season, winning 16 of 19 games across the first half. Since the Rockies affiliate clinched the first half title, if they were to win the second half as well, their championship opponent would come down to the next best overall record through the entire season.

Entering play Saturday,

Vancouver holds a three-game advantage over Eugene for the second-best overall record.

HIT THE SLOPE:

Pat Gallagher makes his 14th start of the season – and 2nd of the series – in Sunday’s finale.

The Leominster, Massachusetts native spun just three innings on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits while punching out four Emeralds.

He was pulled from the game after just 39 pitches to keep him fresh for his second start of the week.

All told on the season, the former UConn Husky has a 4.86 ERA through 53.2 innings, striking out 46 while walking 17.

Gallagher’s splitter has been his go-to pitch of late, as he’s thrown it more and more in recent starts to generate weak contact. Cesar Perdomo gets the ball for the Emerald

Friday night the Vancouver Canadians were in a must win game in the best of five championship series against the Eugene Emeralds to keep their season alive.

If you ask anyone they’ll tell you that having a hometown advantage motivates the players and this game alone proved that considering that they were playing in front of 5,951 fans.

The C’s are the farm team for the BlueJays while the Emeralds are the farm team for San Francisco who claimed their second consecutive league title and the fourth in the span of six seasons.

Games one and two were played in Eugene on Monday and Tuesday with the following two days being off day’s, if there is such a thing as an off-day.

Many that we asked in the bleachers mentioned “Wow, what a game” and truer words were never spoken, it was a wild finish!

For those who missed out on the season you should know that there are only six teams in the Northwest League that have the first and second half champions bypass a semi-final round making their way to the finals.

The seesaw battle continued until the top of the fifth when Luis Toribio hammered a three-run homer only to have the C’s even the score in the bottom of the inning.

Eugene jumped out to a lead when Luis Matos hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, with many thinking the season was ending for the C’s.

Not to be outdone the C’s rallied on their fan support scoring three managing to take the lead into the top of the ninth.

With their backs to the wall pondering a game four the power of the Emeralds came through that saw  Gabriel Martinez line a double to right centre in the bottom of the ninth.

This scored the tying run that saw a momentum change but to pull out a win they were searching for a pair for the win.

At the bottom of the ninth they were going to extra innings that had their fans on the edge of the seats at times gasping when any pitch was sent across the plate.

The C’s were one out from sending the game to the bottom of the 10th tied, but in the end it was Jimmy Glowenke who hammered the 1-1 pitch from Connor Cooke over the left-center field wall.

The bottom of the 10th saw the C’s with the automatic runner on second to set the Canadians down in order ending any rally the C’s were hoping for giving the Emeralds the championship.

Family Time

Following the game I had a chance to go on the diamond and chat with Brent on the season and what’s next for both him and the team.

As one might expect he is hoping for a week off to visit his family who he has not seen for the past five months and from there who knows?

The long and winding road has come to an end for this talented group and we wish them all the best in their career.

Regardless of the loss the C’s put together a magical run all season only wanting the fans eagerly waiting for next season.

Cloverdale’s (Surrey) Damiano Palmegiani and teammate sign for the kids post game. Giving back.

Thanks to the C’s for the magic from Sportswave!!!

On a day that was on the mind of many in the crowd reflecting their memories of 911 which happened 21 years ago that forever changed the world.

Not that the world was perfect prior to this, but this one event has had and will continue to have an impact on how everyone looks at each other and simply wonders what’s next?

It’s sad to have to reflect back on this tragic event while many are simply trying to get on with their life with the sights and sounds still fresh in our minds.

While some might seem skeptical if anything positive came of this, simply put nothing good came of this.

Vancouver Canadians Manager Brent Lavallee clearly remembers where he was considering that he grew up in North Delta on that tragic day, but as with all of us we all have to move forward.

Moving forward at the best of times isn’t an easy task and given the way in which the C’s turned their season around he is confident that his team is up to the task.

As first year manager for the team he grew up watching, he knew pressure was clearly on him to put together a solid on-field team that could compete.

The first half of the schedule wasn’t as they might have hoped, managing a record of 30 wins, 33 losses and 8 games behind  holding 15 home wins and 15 losses.

Given the first half record it’s fair to say that the naysayers were questioning their on-field talent, but as we all know there was lots of ball left to be played.

The second half saw the team improve managing 37 wins, 29 losses six games behind lead, leading Eugene who had a season record of 81 wins and 48 losses.

Canadians Manager and former North Delta player set his sights on the playoffs prior to the start of the season and knowing Brent dreams lead to higher expectations.

Finishing the season with a home stand against the Emeralds proved a hard task for the C’s considering that Eugene finishes the regular season without losing a series since May 17th

The C’s sent Perez Lopez to the mound, but his outing was nothing to write home about, giving up 4 runs on 2 hits with three base on balls.

To no surprise the C’s pulled Lopez sending Ryan to the mound who only pitched 1.2 innings giving up two runs managing five base on balls.

Next up was Lucella Brazil’s Eric Pardinho who had his hands full while the teams traded a pair of runs in the third only to have Eugene take a 6-2 lead.

The Em’s added another in the top of the fifth with the C’s getting one in the bottom of the sixth still trailing by  a 7-3 margin.

Trying to rally their squad they sent Mason Fluharty to the mound who gave up three hits being relieved by Brock who was on the rubber for one inning.

He gave way to Jommer Hernandez who gave up a pair of runs in the top of the 9th sending the Em’s home with a 9-3 win.

While the regular season has officially come to an end, it’s on to the next round starting in just over 24 hours playing their game day opponent in a best of five series.

The first two games are in Eugene on Monday and Tuesday at PK Park which they share with the University of Oregon followed by game three at Nat Bailey Friday September 16th.

The series is a best of five and depending on the first three, game four is Saturday September 17th and game five Sunday September 18th also at the Nat.

If you look at the overall stats you have to think that they are on the side of Eugene considering that they have won four of  the five games heading into today’s game.

In conversation with Brent following Sunday’s game he likes the idea of coming home to the Nat playing in front of a sell-out crowd which is expected to be close to 6,000 C’s supporters.

It’s not expected that either team will add additional players to the roster, but that’s not out of the equation at this time of the season.

Let’s remember that the C’s last taste of playoff action was in 2017 when they defeated Eugene managing to win what was then the old short season single A Northwest League Championship.

Let’s fill the Nat and support the C’s in the playoff run and feel free to call Steve in the box office at Nat Bailey.

From an early age we were taught that playing sports was meant to respect your opponent and above all else listen to your coaches and have fun.

Coaches bring out the best in any athlete, young or old but for some reason players fail to understand what or how to respect their fellow player.

Anyone who watches sport has an understanding that players can at times get aggressive and play with no respect for the rules but also their opponent.

At what age does this begin and why is a question that as parents you have to ask yourself, but does it start at practice or at home.

I watch players “flip out” in a variety of sports ranging from pro to beer league sports with the individual thinking that scouts are in the crowd waiting to sign them.

If that’s your mindset, take up another sport or better yet stay home and let someone else take your spot on the team, which doesn’t have to be a team sport.

This can happen even in a tennis match where you are the only one playing with the ball that goes out of bounds on what you feel is a missed call by the umpire.

At times you have to think that this is installed in the individual at a young age which was taught by mom or dad or possibly yet a coach?

From minor to pro athletes have a desire to win at all costs and if they happen to lose some think that they will be classified as second best; which is far from the truth.

Everyone or some are concerned about concussions and how it will affect the athlete in the future when they get older but at a young age no one really knows.

Hockey allows fighting, but has issues with possible concussions, soccer allows “heading the ball” and doesn’t think about it, while figure skating uses no helmets.

All of the above are considered within the rules and part of the sport, but what happens is and when something tragic occurs, which we hope never happens.

Locally the Ladner Pioneers are playing in Leduc for the championship for the Presidents Cup with the Pioneers having a perfect 16-0 season.

In one of the games which I hear was “heated” I am hearing that one of the Pioneer players became involved in an altercation and was bitten – yes bitten but the opposition player.

Reflecting back to the last Vancouver Whitecaps home game Lucas Cavallini (29) was sent off with a Red Card and is facing a four game suspension which will be a huge loss to the Caps.

He (Cavallini) was on the pitch for only eight minutes and then knocked Nashville SC midfielder Alex Muyl to the ground and proceeded to stop on the back of his head and no I’m not exaggerating.

The referee Jon Freemon abruptly issued an immediate red card, with Cavallini later saying “I haven’t been sleeping since what happened. I apologize for letting my teammates down, the club, the fans. You guys have been great with me and everyone has been supportive.

“I hate to do things like this and just let the emotions get the worst out of me. Especially at a time like this where we need points more than ever and we’re pushing for a playoff spot. It is what it is. I’ve just got to be supportive of the team and push my teammates.”

First off, why would any player let alone a pro step on anyone’s head and say what you will, he knew what he did.

Now he’s remorseful for two reasons, first he got caught and secondly he’s facing a suspension from the league.

It is interesting to note that he has been suspended in the 2020 season and was issued a second yellow card in a home match September 13th vs Montreal.

The reason is similar to this as at that time he was suspended one match after dragging his foot over the top of Montreal goalkeeper Clement Diop but later said he was sorry.

In a recent conversation with some of our youth soccer parents and young players they are wondering why the team did not first suspend him for his actions, which I can not answer.

You have to ask yourself in either of the above situations how or what would the player who did the action do if he was having a bad day at home and his son or daughter dropped the milk jug causing it to spill.

If actions like either of the above two happened on the street this might just be a situation for the police to handle, so why do it??

Professional players are looked up to by today’s youth and as one young girl mentioned “It’s time for these players to grow up and I know it wouldn’t happen from any player on my team.”

Out of the mouth of today’s youth and honestly speaking – she is speaking the truth!!
